Where the animal actually sits
A BaZi chart has four pillars — year, month, day and hour — and each pillar is a stem-and-branch pair, giving eight characters. The zodiac animal is the branch of the first pillar only. It says something real about the era and family background you were born into, and nothing at all about your temperament in isolation.
This is why two people born in the same Tiger year can be nothing alike. They share one character out of eight. The other seven — including the entire day pillar, which is the part that represents them personally — are different.
What to read instead
The stem of your day pillar is your Day Master, and it is the symbol a BaZi reading treats as you. Everything else in the chart is interpreted by how it relates to that one stem: what feeds it, what drains it, what it can command, what constrains it.
The day pillar as a whole — stem plus branch together — is more specific still. There are sixty of them in the cycle, so a day pillar narrows you down about five times further than an animal sign does, and unlike the animal it describes your own nature rather than your birth year's.
Is the zodiac wrong, then?
Not wrong — just far broader than people assume it to be. Read as one of eight signals it behaves sensibly. Read as a personality type on its own, it is being asked to carry about eight times the weight it can.
The same caution applies to zodiac compatibility charts. Two charts matching or clashing is a question about all eight characters on each side, not about two animals.
