Geng Wu Day Pillar

Blade metal in the forge fire. The fire is punishing and it is also what shapes the edge: this pillar takes form under pressure and loosens without it.

The ground beside a road: everyone walks on it, few notice it, and the road needs it.

In the sixty-pillar cycle each image is shared by exactly two pillars. 庚午 shares Roadside Earth with 辛未, though the two differ in polarity, animal and hidden stems.

Gēng carries the image of unrefined metal — an axe, an ore. That is this pillar's baseline; the branch it is paired with decides the rest.

Wǔ is Fire, yang in polarity, and carries the Horse.

Hidden stems: every branch conceals stems of its own, in descending weight — Dīng Fire (70%), Jǐ Earth (30%).

The ground here constrains the stem: disciplined, able to carry pressure, and permanently a little tensed — the release has to be deliberate.
